With the world of girls rugby growing at a rapid rate. Sydney Junior Rugby Union (SJRU) have announced a new competition for girls to play the full format of the XV’s game.
Originally slated to begin in 2020 (before COVID-19 impacted last season), this will be the first opportunity for our girls to have a fully fledged junior girls XVs comp in the Sydney metro basin.
The Competition is to be held over the month of May, covering the U14s, U16s and U18s age groups. The U14s being the will be played as a 12 aside format to enable an easier transition for players and clubs alike. The U16s and U18 competitions will be held as 15 aside competitions.
SJRU Chairman, Anthony Hunt said “This is a magnificent opportunity for our girls to transition to the XV’s game and the Representative pathways that follow it.”
“Our girls 7s competitions have been hugely successful, but we appreciate that Rugby 7s doesn’t suit all players and this will fill that void for many young girls moving forward”.
"We encourage any young girls interested to give it a go."
To help facilitate this fledgling competition both SJRU & NSWRU have waived their fees to make this opportunity as cost effective as possible - So only insurance & club costs will apply.
These age groups align perfectly with the Rugby 1st NSWJRU Girls State Championships which will be held at Boronia Park, Hunters Hill on 12th-14th June.
NSW Juniors President, Ben Gregory commented “This new competition by SJRU is a fantastic addition to their suite of competition offerings and will dovetail perfectly as the first step into the Representative & GEN BLUE pathways that have been developing for our girls”
“I’d encourage all clubs to get behind this and be part of what is the fastest growing area of our game”
