The best teens in the state were on show at U18 rugby selection trials. And there were plenty of future Waratahs and Wallabies strutting their stuff as selectors made their picks. SQUADS.

Teenager Zeb Misios and his country cohorts love nothing better than beating their city rivals and that’s exactly what the Country side did at the NSWSRU All Schools & U18’s Open Selection Trials.

The event showcased the best teen talent in the state ahead of numerous squad selections, including the Gen Blues1 and II teams, Barbarians, Schools and Sydney Junior teams.

And Misios and his teammates were some of the standouts as they wreaked havoc on the field in a great hit out for a much-anticipated, upcoming clash with City.

The Coffs Harbour teenager lead by example with two tries in the 41-7 Country victory over AICES (Association of Independent Co-Educational Schools).

Among numerous players in the team turning heads was Phil Talaileva, who scored a hat-trick for Country and teammate Charlie Cartwright - both named overnight in the NSW Junior squad.

“We started off strong and I told the boys to keep the pressure on. If you do that teams slowly fold,’’ said 17-year-old Misios who plays for the Southern Cross Uni Marlins.

Manly’s Jamie Clark, named overnight in the Gen Blues 1 squad, was involved in the closest game of the day - the GPS II’s 12-15 win over Sydney Juniors.

“It was a close one, physical and very windy which impacted the kicking game,’’ said the 17-year-old loose head prop with Sydney University Colts.

“All the squads are named from this so we were pretty keen to play well.

“I’d like to get into Aussie schoolboy teams by the end of theyear. Im taking it step by step.’’

Jack Bowen, who played for GPS in their win over Sydney, was also named in the Gen Blue U18 squad.

The 17-year-old is in Year 12 at St Ignatius’ Riverview and on the comeback from a knee injury which left him“craving to get out there’’.

“The goals are to hopefully win the GPS premiership, make the Gen Blues and the Aussie under 18s,’’ he said. “I’mserious about rugby.’’

Also impressing was big second rower Clement Halaholo from Waverley College in the CAS I side which beat CHS I 36-12

“I’m trying to make the the Aussie schoolboys team. That’s always been a big dream for me,’’ he said.

“I used to play junior ages in league but then chose rugby.’’
